Karl Wilhelm Schurig (born December 17, 1818 in Leipzig , † March 10, 1874 in Dresden ) was a German painter and illustrator who worked, among other things, in the field of history painting .

Life

Schurig studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Leipzig , then towards the end of the 1830s in Dresden , where he later also became a student of Eduard Bendemann . Thanks to an academic travel grant, he was able to visit Italy from 1845 to 1848.

When he returned to Dresden, he married and tried his hand at working as a freelance painter, without having any great success. He worked as a teacher since 1853, but even after his appointment to the Dresden Academy in 1857 , the financial means were insufficient. Chalk drawings that he made for the Dresden company Brockmann for the purpose of photographic reproduction were a way out. With these he had earned a high reputation for their size and artistic quality.

Schurig died on March 10, 1874 after a long illness and was buried on March 13 in Dresden.

His son Felix (1852–1907) also became an artist and emigrated to North America after the turn of the century.
