Karl von Coudenhove

Karl Maria Graf von Coudenhove (born December 2, 1814 in Vienna , † August 28, 1868 in Bad Ischl ) was an Austrian Lieutenant Field Marshal . Coudenhove commanded the 3rd Reserve Cavalry Division in the German War (1866) .

Life

origin

Coming from an old family born in Wallonia , he was destined for the military career. His father was the Imperial Austrian FML Franz Ludwig Graf von Coudenhove (* January 24, 1783; † December 4, 1851) and his mother the baroness Catharina Jakobine Auguste von Löwenstern (* January 24, 1785; † November 24, 1860).

Military career

At the age of 19 he joined the Tyrolean Kaiserjäger Regiment in 1833 as a sub-lieutenant and later moved to the Kaiser Chevaulegers . In 1839 he moved to the 5th Cuirassier Regiment, where he was promoted to Rittmeister in 1842 and to Major in January 1849 . During the Hungarian uprising in 1848 he fought with the Auersperg cuirassiers in Moravia and operated with his horsemen between Kaschau and the Tisza . On April 26, 1849, he carried out an attack in the First Battle of Komorn and on June 16 in the unit of the Theissing Brigade. On June 21, 1849, his horsemen covered the left wing of the Tiscing Brigade at the Battle of Pered . Shortly thereafter, his regiment fought near Raab (June 28), in the Second and Third Battles near Komorn (July 2 and 11), and on August 9 in the Battle of Temesvár , where he carried out another attack on the right wing . In 1856 he was appointed Colonel and Commander of the Cuirassier Regiment Emperor Ferdinand No. 4. He was promoted to major general on May 27, 1859, and was appointed adjutant general to the emperor the following year. After the death of Field Marshal Prince zu Windisch-Grätz , he was appointed owner of his cuirassier regiment in 1862.

During the Battle of Königgrätz (July 3, 1866) his cuirassiers (3rd Reserve Cavalry Division) in the battle at Stresetitz and Rosberitz-Langenhof against the Prussian cavalry brigade under General von der Groeben carried out a loss-making counter-attack that defeated the Infantry Corps of the FZM Benedek allowed the retreat. On August 3, 1866, he was promoted to Lieutenant Field Marshal and on December 18, 1867, he was discharged from the army because of a serious illness.

From his marriage to Leopoldine Honrichs zu Wolfswarffen (born January 5, 1826 in Brno, † March 14, 1894 in Vienna) he had several children:
