Live and act

The son of the Württemberg State Councilor August Friedrich von Köstlin and Wilhelmine Mayer, sister of the poet lawyer Karl Mayer and the landscape painter Louis Mayer , studied law after leaving school. In 1855 he took up a position as a court actuary in Waldsee and a year later in Waiblingen . After Köstlin was a member of the board of the women's workhouse in Heilbronn from 1860 , he held the office of district judge in this city from 1868 and was transferred to Ellwangen an der Jagst as a district judge in 1871 . Finally, in 1873, he was appointed director of the Heilbronn cell prison, which Köstlin had previously been instrumental in founding. During his tenure, Köstlin, who as a student had been shaped by the ideals of the German Revolution of 1848/49 , was considered a pioneer of a humane penal system and was particularly committed to his political prisoners such as Ludwig Pfau .

For his various services, Köstlin was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of the Württemberg Crown in 1882 , which was associated with the personal nobility. As part of his retirement in 1896, he received the Cross of Honor of this order.

Like many members of the Köstlin family, which is widespread in Württemberg , Karl von Köstlin also supported cultural life in Heilbronn in a variety of ways in addition to his official obligations. Among other things, he was one of the founding members of the Heilbronn Art Association in 1879 and was a long-term member of the board. He was also a member of the Heilbronn Gräßle Society , an elite panel discussion, as well as friends of the house Fleiner Straße 1 based lover Theater Heilbronn .

Karl von Köstlin was married to Anna Friederike Luise Scholl (1836-1922) from Lauterburg , with whom he had several children, including the later staatsschauspieler at Berlin's Schiller Theater , Reinhold Köstlin (1876-1967).
