Ludwig Hartmann "Louis" Mayer (born May 23, 1791 in Bischofsheim im Kraichgau ; † November 18, 1843 in Stuttgart ) was a German landscape painter . His brother Karl Mayer (1786–1870) belonged to the Swabian circle of poets .

Life

Ludwig Hartmann Mayer was born as the second son of Friedrich Christoph Mayer (1762–1841), bailiff of the Lords of Helmstatt zu Bischofsheim. Among his 14 godparents was Carl Christoph von Helmstatt († 1795) from the Protestant New Bischofsheim branch of the Dürrkasteler branch of the Helmstatt family. For his siblings see Friedrich Christoph Mayer, family . His middle name Hartmann is his mother's maiden name. He always called himself Louis .

Even the father is said to have had a talent for drawing . After the death of his employer in 1795, the family moved in 1797 to their father's new place of work in Heilbronn . Brother Karl moved to live with Hartmann's grandparents in Stuttgart and attended grammar school there, while Louis spent his youth in Heilbronn and trained as a businessman. The younger brother August died in Russia in 1812 .

Despite his early artistic inclinations, Louis Mayer initially worked for several years for trading houses in Heidenheim, Stuttgart and Heilbronn. It was not until 1824, at the age of 33, that he attended the Stuttgart Academy under Gottlob Friedrich Steinkopf . From 1830 to 1832 he took study trips across Italy , then further trips via Tyrol , the Salzburg region and Styria to Switzerland and through southern Germany , where he drew landscapes. His drawings and watercolors are in the romantic style and focus on the mood of the landscape. The watercolors served as templates for steel engravings to illustrate the book "Tirol und Steiermark" , 30 pictures appeared in 1838 in the volume Walks through Swabia by Gustav Schwab.

Mayer was in contact with the Swabian poets' circle and was part of Justinus Kerner's circle of friends , whose house in Weinsberg he also captured in the picture.
