The third album by James Taylor was the final breakthrough for the songwriter. The single from You've Got a Friend became his only number one hit, earning him the 1972 Grammy Award for Best Male Vocal Performance. The Carole King song also received a Grammy for Song of the Year. Taylor's album was released in April 1971 and Carole King's album Tapestry was released in March 1971. Both singer / songwriter albums were the most successful albums in this genre in 1971. Mud Slide Slim and the Blue Horizon reached second place on the pop album charts.
