Peter Asher (born June 22, 1944 in London , England ) is an English guitarist, singer, music manager and producer . Before his career as a music producer, he celebrated success in the 1960s as part of the pop duo Peter & Gordon .

Life

Peter Asher is the son of the physician Sir Richard Asher (1912–1969), who first described Munchausen syndrome , and the music professor Margaret Asher (1914–2011), whose most famous student was George Martin . Asher has two younger sisters, the actress and author Jane Asher (* 1946) and the actress Clare Asher (* 1948). From the age of eight, Peter Asher worked as an actor in various film, stage and television productions, including the film "White Woman in the Jungle" ( Planter's Wife , 1952) and the television series " The Adventures of Robin Hood " ( The Adventures of Robin Hood , 1955-1960).

At Westminster School , Asher met his classmate Gordon Waller (1945-2009), with whom he began to perform as a music duo in cafes and clubs. From 1962 they called themselves Peter & Gordon . In 1964 they had their biggest hit with A World Without Love , written by Paul McCartney , who was then dating Jane Asher. Through this acquaintance, the duo often received unpublished material from McCartney to record.

In 1965 Peter Asher was the best man when his friend John Dunbar married Marianne Faithfull . In November of the same year, Asher and Dunbar opened the Indica Gallery with Barry Miles .

In 1968 Asher and Waller parted ways. Peter Asher started the record label of the Beatles , Apple Records as an A & R work managers. He signed the then unknown James Taylor and produced his first album. Although the album wasn't a huge success, Asher went to America with Taylor to work as Taylor's manager and producer. This collaboration resulted in a number of successful albums, including Sweet Baby James (1970), Mud Slide Slim and the Blue Horizon (1971), JT (1977) and Flag (1979).

Other artists Asher has produced for over the years include Linda Ronstadt , JD Souther , Bonnie Raitt , Cher , Diana Ross , Randy Newman, and many more.

In 1973, Peter Asher was one of the partners who opened the Roxy Theater on the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles .

From 1995 to 2002, Asher was Senior Vice President at Sony Music Entertainment . In 2002 he became co-president, then in 2005 president of the artist agency Sanctuary Artist Management. In 2006 he retired to join his friend Simon Renshaw, who founded the agency Strategic Artist Management, the following year.

From 2005, Peter Asher and Gordon Waller, who died in 2009, occasionally reappeared together.

Austin Powers

Rumors circulated that Mike Myers had used Asher as a model for his agent parody Austin Powers . Asher denied this, but admitted that Austin Powers and young Peter Asher are strikingly alike.
