Wayne Jackson ( Wayne Lamar Jackson , * 24. November 1941 in Memphis , Tennessee ; † 21st June 2016 ), nicknamed The Soul Man (.. English, German the Soul -man ) was an American trumpeter , arranger and songwriter . He is the one, light-skinned half of the core of the American backing band The Memphis Horns .

Life

The musician grew up in West Memphis , Arkansas . After his first musical attempts on a guitar, his mother gave him a trumpet on his 11th birthday:

"I opened up the case, and it smelled like oil and brass. I loved that, so I put it together, blew, and out came a pretty noise. My first taste of Sweet Medicine. (English, to German, for example: I opened the suitcase, it smelled of oil and brass. I liked that, so I put it together, blew, and: there was a nice noise - my first impression of a sweet medicine.) "

After a long stay in Nashville , he later lived on the banks of the Mississippi River with his wife in his native Memphis. He was happy to pass on his (musical) knowledge and experience to students all over the world.

Jackson learned the basics of trumpet playing at West Memphis High School from the band director Phil Vance .

His long-time partner as the core of the Memphis Horns was the dark-skinned tenor saxophonist Andrew Love .

With country music - Legend Marty Robbins he toured for three years in a bus around. During this time he became the only trumpet player to date on the Grand Ole Opry , the longest-lived radio show in US broadcast history.

The Memphis Horns were among the first artists of the pioneering American record label and music publisher Stax Records and accompanied countless greats of the US and international music and show business with their brass instruments, including Elvis Presley , Bob Dylan , Duane Allman , Luther Allison and Joan Baez , the Doobie Brothers , Dr. John , Aretha Franklin , Isaac Hayes , BB King , King Curtis , Willie Nelson , Buffy Sainte-Marie , Rod Stewart , James Taylor , Aerosmith , Joan Armatrading , Cinderella , the Fabulous Thunderbirds , Al Green , Buddy Guy , the Hooters , Mark Knopfler , Gary Moore , Roy Orbison , Primal Scream , the Replacements , Keith Richards , U2 , Sting , Johnny Van Zant , Peter Gabriel , Steve Winwood , Neil Young and Zucchero .
