Heart of gold

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Heart of Gold is a song by Neil Young from his 1972 album Harvest and is the only number one hit of his long musical career.

background

The song, in which James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt participated as backing singers, is one of a series of gentle acoustic pieces that can be traced back in part to the musician's back surgery, which became necessary as a late consequence of his polio infection in 1951. Young couldn't stand and play an electric guitar for long at the time. Therefore, he played acoustic guitar, which he could also play while sitting.

The song was recorded as part of the sessions for the 1971 album Harvest at Quadrafonic Studios in Nashville , Tennessee . Ronstadt and Taylor were in Nashville at the time to appear on Johnny Cash's television program , and the album's producer, Elliot Mazer, hired them as backing vocalists.
