biography

His educational path is unclear; possibly he attended a convent school and then began law studies. When his father Karl Dominik, the former Landammann , had to flee Schwyz for political reasons in the turmoil of the Helvetic Republic , the entire family moved to Baden . Son Karl received citizenship of Oberehrendingen in 1803 and married in the same year. Through his wife Walburga he came into possession of the Haus zum Schwert in Baden, in which he had a restaurant operated from 1827. From 1804 he was clerk of the Baden district , then from 1807 to 1808 district judge and from 1807 to 1811 magistrate.

In 1808 Reding was elected to the Grand Council ; he in turn elected him to the cantonal government in 1811, as the successor to the late Castor Baldinger . The conservative Reding headed the Department of the Interior, but remained a Grand Councilor and presided over it in 1813/14 (there was no separation of powers at that time). From 1819 he was also a member of the school council. In the 1820s he represented the canton in negotiations on the creation of the new diocese of Basel . Reding was also a delegate at the Federal Coin Conference in Bern ; in Sigmaringen he also attended the negotiations on the possessions of the Muri monastery in southern Germany.

After the Freiämtersturm in 1831, Reding was forced to resign from the cantonal government, a year later he also gave up his seat on the Grand Council. In the years 1834/35 and 1840/41 he temporarily belonged again to the cantonal parliament. On January 13, 1841, he was one of the 19 parliamentarians who voted against the resolution to abolish the monastery (→ Aargauer Klosterstreit ). Reding finally withdrew from politics and devoted himself to local historical studies.
