The Karlsplatz is a central place in the Berlin district of Lichterfelde the district Steglitz-Zehlendorf . It represents the urban planning center of the Lichterfelde villa colony . It is the end of the Lichterfelde Friedrichstrasse, and is flanked by the Ringstrasse, Basler Strasse and Kadettenweg.

History of Karlplatz

As part of the garden city, the square was planned and laid out by Johann Anton Wilhelm von Carstenn at the end of the 19th century . Carstenn was also responsible for the creation of the Wilmersdorfer and Friedenauer Carstenn-Firgur , two urban road structures. The place was named after Prince Carl of Prussia , a brother of Kaiser Wilhelm I , general of the infantry and first master of the Order of St. John, restored in 1852 . The Order of St. John has its seat in Lichterfelde. Prince Carl lived in his palace on Berlin's Wilhelmplatz and in Glienicke Palace , which he had commissioned Karl Friedrich Schinkel to expand.

Today there is a children's playground on the square, which is surrounded by green areas and seating.

In February 2015, the square was redesigned through private donations. The green areas were renewed and the wooden fence was replaced by a higher quality one made of metal.

Even the Karlsplatz in Berlin-Mitte is named after Prince Carl (see Bertolt Brecht's poem The poplar from Charles Square from the year 1950).

Naming

There are different ways of spelling the square: Contrary to the first name of its historical namesake, his name is not 'Carlplatz'. In numerous places the square is referred to as 'Karlsplatz' (with an 's'), even the historicizing street sign shows this name. In 1934 the official dedication was revoked as the place had no postal meaning. The name lives on in the population; the historicizing street sign is not an official street sign.
