Karlsburger Holz (Schleswig-Holstein)

The Karlsburger wood (also Karlsburger woods , Gerebyer wood u. Gerebyholz , Danish Karlsborg Skov u. Geréby Skov ) is a 186 hectares between the municipalities Dörphof , Thumby and Winnemark on the peninsula Schwansen in northeastern Schleswig-Holstein ( Southern Schleswig ) located forest area . Most of it is under the Thumby community. The name of the forest is derived from the settlement and Gut Karlsburg or Gereby . Today the wood is owned by the Grünholz estate . Geographically, the area is only a few km between Schlei and the Baltic Sea coast in an otherwise strongly agricultural environment. The wood is a near-natural deciduous forest and at the same time the largest, closed deciduous forest in the natural area Schwansen with near-natural beech , oak and small areas of oak and hornbeam forests in different phases of age and development stages on gently moving soft ice age ground moraine . There are several hiking and riding trails. The Karsburger Holz is designated as FFH area 1425-301.
