The Stadtwiki Karlsruhe is an information portal for the city of Karlsruhe and its surroundings ( Middle Upper Rhine region ). For several years it was the largest Regiowiki in the world.
content
The Stadtwiki Karlsruhe contains information on all topics related to Karlsruhe, it provides detailed and networked information on geography, nature, history, politics, religion, education, culture, social affairs, sport, business and transport. It also provides information on the topics of tourism and leisure with excursion destinations, gastronomy guides, associations and event locations, and expressly functions as an event calendar. The only relevance criterion is the connection to Karlsruhe. More than 2000 authors are writing the content, around a very active core of around 90 authors (as of April 2016). In October 2008 the city wiki was expanded to include an English and a French edition, and in September 2009 a Russian version.
history
Hauke Löffler from Karlsruhe started the first version of the wiki on July 22nd, 2004. Initially, a Linux PC with PmWiki next to his bed served as the server . The wiki then ran with the MediaWiki software on a server of the regional Internet provider INKA e. V., Karlsruhe. After articles in the regional press and later by the dpa , public interest also rose nationwide. On April 7, 2006 the 5000th article was created. Since July 24, 2006, the Stadtwiki Karlsruhe has been the largest city wiki in the world for the first time. After a post on ZDF and a vandalism attack in October 2006, the city wiki ran on a server at Strato , which maintains data centers in Karlsruhe and Berlin, the operating system remained Debian GNU / Linux .
In August 2008 the city wiki moved to a larger server, which runs with FreeBSD and virtualization via jails.
financing
In the beginning, the Stadtwiki Karlsruhe was privately financed. In October 2005, several active employees established a sponsoring association called Stadtwiki - Society for the Promotion of Regional Free Knowledge e. V. founded in Karlsruhe. This association does not restrict its activities regionally, and so in 2008 the Bildungsverein Region Karlsruhe e. V. founded, which since February 28, 2008 is also the sponsoring and sponsoring association for the Stadtwiki Karlsruhe.
The entire city wiki has been free of any kind of advertising since the beginning and is financed exclusively by donations and membership fees to the respective sponsoring association.
technology
The Stadtwiki Karlsruhe has been using the MediaWiki software since September 2004 . It participates in the development of the MediaWiki extension Semantic MediaWiki , which is being developed at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology , in order to be able to build a semantic city wiki . This has also been used productively in the English version of the city wiki since October 2008.
License
The Creative Commons license applies to all texts : “Attribution-non-commercial distribution under the same conditions” (CC-BY-NC-SA). The fact that the Karlsruhe City Wiki has chosen a Creative Commons license is also due to the fact that the Institute for Information Law at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, under the direction of Thomas Dreier, was involved in the German CC translations. Images can be uploaded under any license, which gives traders more options and also allows the inclusion of press photos.
