Karol Boromeusz Aleksander Hoffmann (* 1798 in Mazovia ; † July 6, 1875 in Blasewitz near Dresden) was a Polish lawyer and writer .

Life

Karol Boromeusz Aleksander Hoffmann studied law in Warsaw . However, since he was suspected by the Russian government of participating in patriotic-Polish political connections, he was declared incapable of civil service and now devoted himself mainly to literary activity. In 1825 he founded the Polish Themis , a legal journal, and in 1827 published a Polish translation of Benjamin Franklin's works. It was not until 1828 that he received the post of councilor at the Polish Bank .

At the outbreak of the Warsaw November Uprising in 1830, Hoffmann took a lively part in the organization of the National Guard and the Warsaw authorities and published the fiery text “ Poland's Liberation Week ” (French: La Grande semaine des Polonais ), which was translated into several languages . In 1831 he became one of the three directors of the bank and in this position went to Germany to broker a loan. He stayed in Frankfurt am Main until the storming of Warsaw and then went to Dresden . There he wrote the brochure Coup d'oeil sur l'état politique du royaume de Pologne sous la domination russe , including secret papers left behind by the Russian government in Warsaw . In 1832 he had to leave Dresden at the request of the Russian ambassador and went to Paris with his wife, the popular Polish author Klementyna Hoffmanowa . There he wrote other writings and showed himself to be a supporter of Prince Czartoryski. In 1848 he returned to Dresden. He then lived in Galicia for a long time and died on July 6, 1875 in Blasewitz near Dresden.

Hoffmann's main work is Historia reform politycznych w dawnej Polsce (Posen 1869). He also wrote about western Pan-Slavism and other things. In contrast to Lelewel , he emphasized the monarchical principle in old Poland.
