The Autenrieth body shop was a body construction company that manufactured bodies for passenger cars in Darmstadt between 1921 and 1964 .
Company history
In the first decades of automobile production - up until the time before the Second World War - it was common practice for passenger cars to have bodies from specialized, external bodywork manufacturers in addition to the manufacturer's bodies. One of the better-known German companies was that of the wheelwright Georg Autenrieth, founded in 1921 in Weinsberg near Heilbronn and since 1925 based in Darmstadt, Feldbergstrasse 72.
Sedans , coupés , convertibles and custom-made models on chassis from various well-known pre-war automobile manufacturers such as Adler , Audi , Horch , Maybach , Mercedes-Benz , Opel , NSU and the Röhr works in Ober-Ramstadt (near Darmstadt) were manufactured in individual orders according to customer requirements . BMW vehicles were also bodied in the 1930s . At the end of the 1930s and beginning of the 1940s, the first convertibles based on the KdF car , later the VW Beetle, were also produced in small series .
During the war, the body production was stopped and the company became an armaments supplier. In the reconstruction phase after the Second World War, cooperation with BMW was resumed. Georg Autenrieth died in 1950. The passenger cars of that time with not yet self-supporting bodies continued to be suitable for external bodies, and so in the 1950s a considerable number of coupés and convertibles based on the large BMW models emerged. In addition, convertibles were also produced on early Citroën - DS models and Borgward Isabella . Even better known are Cabriolets and Coupés based on various Opel models such as Olympia , Rekord and Kapitän from the company's last few years . In addition, station wagons and hearses were also made .
In 1964, the production of the coachbuilder Autenrieth ended.
