Ivan Karpenko-Karyj (born September 17, jul. / 29. September  1845 greg. In Arseniwka , Kherson Gubernia , Russian Empire , † September 12 . Jul / 25. September  1907 . Greg in Berlin , Germany ) was a Ukrainian actor, Writer and playwright .

His innovative dramas and comedies, which sometimes satirical, sometimes realistic, show the effects of colonialism in the Russian-ruled Ukraine and the impoverishment of the rural population, shaped modern Ukrainian theater.

Karpenko-Karyj was the brother of Marija Sadowska-Barilotti , Mykola Sadowskyj and Panas Saksahanskyj . He died in Berlin and was buried on his farm near Jelisawetgrad .

In Kirovohrad in 1995 a museum about him was set up in the house where he lived from 1872 to 1883, and in Kiev the National University of Theater, Film and Television is named after him.
