Kasensero is a fishing village in southern Uganda on the shores of Lake Victoria near the border with Tanzania . It is considered to be the place in Africa where AIDS first appeared as an epidemic .

A condition for the sudden and cumulative occurrence of the disease in the town in the Rakai district in 1982 could have been the nearby East African Highway with heavy and far-reaching freight and passenger traffic. In addition, prostitution was and is widespread in Kasensero . In 1982 dozens of people suddenly died in Kasensero. Today there is still no possibility of testing the pathogen in the place.

For Uganda it is currently assumed that one million people are infected with the HI virus .
