Barracks House Hardt

Location of the Haus Hardt barracks in North Rhine-Westphalia

The barracks Haus Hardt is a barracks of the Bundeswehr on the south-eastern outskirts of Nörvenich in the district of Düren , North Rhine-Westphalia .

prehistory

The Düren industrialist Leopold Peill (1872–1941), owner of the Peill & Sohn glassworks, lived in Hardt , who owned the site at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Century bought. After the villa in the Hardt was demolished , in 1943 the construction of an imperial hospital began with the participation of over 500 workers.

In October 1944, the new hospital was due to be opened.

On September 28, 1944, there was an air raid on the hospital around 11 a.m. While the siren sounded and the attempt was made to bring the approximately 100 Hitler Youths from Düren, who had been assigned to the Schanz operation, to safety, the first bombs exploded. Forty young people fell victim to the attack by six Allied fighter bombers with on-board weapons and bombs, which the Düren Gestapo spokesman reported to the Cologne office as follows: “On September 28, 1944, during an air raid on the barracks camp in Nörvenich, several Hitler Youths were pulled together to form a redoubt were, fallen (...) The excitement in the population is great because these boys were fetched with the help of the police [!] (...). ”The boys were buried in the respective home cemeteries in the district area.

It was alleged that the boys had mistakenly assumed they were German planes, climbed onto the roofs and waved to the airmen. According to eyewitnesses, this is wrong.

history

Today's barracks was rebuilt in 1959 on the remains of the former imperial hospital. It was obtained from Luftwaffe Flak Battalion 46. Missile Group 21 of FKG 2 ( Missile Squadron 2) was housed there for a short time in its entirety. After their departure, however, an Air Force first-aid unit of type A of the FKG 2 remained, which took over the medical care of the two telecommunications companies stationed there.

The next units were the 6./Fernmelderegiment 11 and the 7./Fernmelderegiment 11. Since August 20, 1984, the Bundeswehr has been training in Nörvenich to become electronics technicians for devices and systems. Twelve places are available every year to this day.

From June 4, 1974 to September 19, 1975, the Barbara kindergarten of the Catholic military pastoral care existed in the barracks area . From April 1978 to the mid-1980s, around 400 police officers from GSA A / E West, formerly the Federal Border Guard , now the Federal Police , lived in the barracks. until the completion of an accommodation in Sankt Augustin . The commander Ulrich Wegener visited Nörvenich several times.

Since atomic warheads for the Pershing missiles were stored at the air base, American soldiers also came to the place. The Billy Mitchel Elementary School in Haus Hardt was built for the children from 1983 to 1985 .

The indoor swimming pool, the sports hall and the outdoor sports facilities were shared for a long time by the municipality of Nörvenich and the Nörvenich students.

Since it became known on October 26, 2011 that the Nörvenich site will be retained, 3.6 million euros have been invested in the renovation of the work and accommodation areas of the Haus Hardt barracks, where around 480 soldiers are housed.

There are radio masts each in the west and east of the site. Radio traffic is carried over it, which is then routed to the air base via cables. That has to do with the geological conditions, because Haus Hardt is higher than the air base.
