Kaspar Riffel

Kaspar Riffel (born January 19, 1807 in Büdesheim near Bingen am Rhein , † December 15, 1856 in Mainz ) was a Catholic theologian and professor of church history at the University of Giessen .

Life

Kaspar Riffel began his philosophical and theological studies at the seminary in Mainz , but moved to the University of Tübingen in 1829 and finally completed his studies in 1830 at the University of Bonn . In December of the same year he was ordained a priest in Mainz. Since November 1830 he worked as a lecturer in church history at the seminary in Mainz. In the following year Kaspar Riffel was given the job of chaplain in the parish of Bingen am Rhein . At the same time he was employed here as a teacher at the Latin school. In 1835 he was appointed associate professor for moral theology at the Catholic-Theological Faculty of the University of Gießen and city pastor in Gießen. In 1837 Kaspar Riffel was appointed full professor of church history at the Giessen faculty and also obtained his doctorate in theology.

When violent protests arose from the Protestant side against the first volume of his work "Christian Church History of the Latest Times" because of the representation of the Reformation, published in 1841, he was removed from his chair by the Hessian government and retired with full pay. Kaspar Riffel now moved to Mainz, where he became a member of the editorial team of the magazine “ Der Katholik ” in 1848 . When Bishop Wilhelm Emmanuel von Ketteler reopened his own theological training institute for his diocese in Mainz under church supervision in 1851, Kaspar Riffel was appointed professor of church history.
