Katalin Szili (2009)

Katalin Szili [ 'kɒtɒlin' sili ] (born May 13, 1956 in Barcs ) is a Hungarian lawyer and politician from the southern Hungarian city of Pécs . She was President of Parliament from 2002 to 2009.

Szili lost her left hand at the age of 12 when a WWII hand grenade exploded in her hands.

Szili studied law and political science at the University of Pécs . Until 1992 she worked as a lawyer in various offices.

She was a member of the MSzMP (Hungarian Socialist Workers' Party). In 1989 she joined the MSzP (Hungarian Socialist Party). From 1997 to 2001 she was president of the party in the county Baranya , 2000-2004 Deputy Vice President of the party.

Between 1994 and 1998 Szili worked as parliamentary state secretary in the Ministry of Environmental Protection . Since 1994 she has been elected to parliament four times (Hungarian Országgyűlés ). In every election she won the direct mandate in one of the Pécs constituencies. Between 1998 and 2002 she was Vice-President of Parliament. From May 2002 to 2009 she was the President of Parliament.

Szili was named on April 15, 2005 as the MSzP candidate to succeed President Ferenc Mádl . It looked as if a woman could take over the office of President of Hungary for the first time. In the election, which took place on June 6th and 7th, 2005, however, the smaller coalition partner, the liberal SzDSz , did not support her because, as a party politician, she could not embody the non-partisan nature of a state president. The SzDSz did not take part in the election. Szili lost in the third ballot to the former President of the Hungarian Constitutional Court , László Sólyom , who was supported by the opposition.

She was considered the most popular politician in the Socialist Party. As incumbent President of Parliament, she ran for the office of Mayor of Pécs in May 2009 . The election was won by the opposition candidate of Fidesz , Zsolt Páva , with 66%.

In 2010 she founded a new party called Szociális Unió . This expired her membership in the Socialists, she resigned from the parliamentary group in October 2010. Since then she has sat as an independent MP in parliament.

Szili is widely referred to as a recognized and knowledgeable politician. She is married and has two adopted children.
