Katarina Barruk (born December 5, 1994 in Lusspie ( Swedish Storuman) in Sweden ) is a Sami- Swedish singer-songwriter and composer . She sings in the Umesamian language , which is only spoken by 20 to 100 people.

Life

Barruk was born in the Swedish municipality of Storuman in 1994 and speaks Umesamish fluently. From 2010 on she received a three-year musical training at the Midgårdsschule in Umeå . There she also found members for a band. She also taught Umesami at the Algguogåhtie Association .

Barruk was named “Young Artist of the Year” at the Sami Festival Riddu Riđđu in 2012 and received the Youth Prize of the Year the following year during the Sami Week (Samiska Veckan) in Umeå . She worked with, among others, the Norwegian musician and producer Frode Fjellheim , who himself has a South Sami background. In autumn 2015 she released her debut album Báruos .

Barruk writes texts in umesami and composes music combining modern singing and traditional yoik . She gives concerts in the Nordic and also plays the piano.
