Act

John Voirol has been playing wind instruments (flute, clarinet, trumpet) since he was 8 years old. From 1980 to 1985 he studied saxophone at the Jazz School in Bern with Andy Scherrer and attended master classes with Dave Liebman and Ken McIntyre . During the same period he co-founded the jazz department at the Montreux Conservatory (today part of the Lausanne Music Academy ). He later learned to play the oboe and cor anglais by himself .

In the 80s he played in the group Free Pulse with Uli Müller, Thomas Dürst, Teddy Bärlocher and Glenn Ferris . In 1987 he founded the John Voirol Extra Ensemble and played with Klaus Koenig , Chris Wiesendanger , Peter Frei, David Klein , Marc Huber, Hämi Hämmerli , Arne Lötman, John Stowell .

In 1995 the album Shooting Stars & Traffic Lights with John Wolf Brennan , Alex Cline , Daniele Patumi and Tscho Theissing was released. From 1999 he formed the John Voirol Flow'n Jazz 4tet, a synthesis of jazz and drum and bass with Heiri Känzig , Marc Halbheer , Theo Kapilidis and Christoph Stiefel .

After that he focused increasingly, inspired by the jazz saxophonist John Coltrane and Gregorian chant , with the spiritual energy of music, which led him into free improvisation and instrumental sound design.

In 2014 he received the culture award of the community of Hochdorf, in 2016 the work grant from the canton of Lucerne.
