Katerina Belkina (* 1974 in Kuibyshev ) is a Russian photographer and painter .

Life

Katerina Belkina grew up in an artistic household. Her mother was also an artist. From 1989 Belkina studied at the Art School and the Petrov-Vodkin Art Academy in Samara. From 1994 to 1999 she worked at the Fedorow publishing house in Samara. In 2000 she enrolled at the Michael Musorin Academy for Photography in her hometown and studied there until 2002. At the same time, she worked as a computer graphic artist for a Russian TV station. Belkina gained international fame in the mid-2000s when the Italian magazine Il Fotografo featured it in its “Great Photographers” series. In 2007 it was featured in Fine Art Photo, and in 2008 in the Turkish photo magazine Bak.

In 2007 Katerina Belkina was nominated for the Russian Kandinsky Prize . In 2009/2010 she took part in the first photo biennial of the Russian Museum in the Marble Palace in Saint Petersburg . In 2011, an exhibition curated by Tatiana Kurtanova was set up for her as part of the 4th Moscow Biennale for Contemporary Art. During the Art Paris 2013 art fair, Belkina also became known to a larger art audience. Belkina was mentioned more often in reports on Russia, the Guest of Honor, and her works were cited as exemplary for Russia's modern art scene.

For Die Sünderin (English: The Sinner ) she received the International Lucas-Cranach Prize endowed with 6,000 euros in 2015 and won the Hasselblad Masters' Competition in 2016.

She is a member of the Union of Photographers of Russia. She has lived and worked in Berlin since 2013 .

Belkina's photographic work is heavily influenced by painting. The artist focuses entirely on portraits of women. In the last few years it has mainly been staged self-portraits that have determined her work. In her award-winning work "The Sinner", Belkina poses as a pregnant woman. Behind her you can see Christ and the adulteress of Lucas Cranach the Younger . Belkina imitates the dress of the adulteress and takes her place by sitting in front of her. In this way she detaches the woman from the crowd and places her in the center of the picture. In the “Paint” series she combines painterly and photographic elements and recreated paintings by famous painters. The "Hieroglyph" series consists of body fragments that have been processed into collages. In the series No Man's Land , she stages her characters according to female protagonists in fairy tales and fables, which she combines with archetypal ideas and adorns with elements of modern pop culture. The series “Empty Spaces” was created in 2010/11. Here Belkina stages itself in a futuristic style in front of urban spaces.

Her photographs have been published in Photo Art, Twill, Kunstbeeld.NL, Monthly Photo Magazine, Fine Art Photo, Zebra, National Geographic and the Russian Gala , among others .
