Katharine Sophie Viner (* 1971 ) is a British journalist and the first editor-in-chief of the British daily newspaper The Guardian .

Life

youth

Katharine Viner grew up in Yorkshire , her parents were teachers . She was already interested in journalism in elementary school . In 1987 a newspaper article was published by her in the Guardian , which dealt with school exams according to the GCE O standard. In 1988 she worked briefly for the local newspaper Ripon Gazette , after which she studied at Oxford at Pembroke College . Shortly before graduation, she won a writing contest organized by the Guardian , whereupon Louise Chunn, one of the newspaper's staff, asked her to consider a career in journalism.

Career as a reporter

Viner began working for Cosmopolitan magazine to gain work experience and quickly moved to the Sunday Times , where she worked for three years before joining the Guardian in 1997. There she initially wrote for a column specifically aimed at women, before becoming editor for the Saturday supplement Weekend in 1998 . In 2005 she became editor of features and in 2008 she was named deputy editor-in-chief. From 2008 to 2012 she was responsible for the entire Saturday edition of the newspaper.

Editorial work in Australia and New York

Viner also had the task of developing the Australian edition of the newspaper and was in "Down Under" for 16 months, after which she managed the US edition of New York City from summer 2014 until she was elected editor-in-chief of the newspaper .

Editor-in-Chief of the Guardian

Viner was able to prevail in a vote in March 2015 to succeed Alan Rusbridger as the new editor-in-chief, receiving 53% of the votes. Her election was announced on March 20, and she took over from Rusbridger on June 1, 2015, as the first woman in the 194-year history of the newspaper. She prevailed against 26 applicants and is only the twelfth person to serve as the newspaper's editor-in-chief.

When she took over the editorial management, the newspaper was financially troubled and made great losses. It turned things around by making massive savings, downsizing the format of the print edition and cutting staff. For the online edition, she dispensed with a paywall , instead relying on donations, so-called memberships of the readers and - controversial - cooperation with sponsors such as the Bill Gates Foundation . The number of page views increased as did the number of subscriptions.

additional

Viner co-wrote a play with Alan Rickman called My Name Is Rachel Corrie , which deals with the life of Rachel Corrie , an American activist who was killed by an Israeli bulldozer in Rafah , Gaza in 2003. The play premiered at the Royal Court Theater in 2005 .
