Katharinenhöhe

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Katharinenhöhe is an aftercare facility for children with severe oncologically , hematologically or cardiologically ill children and their families as well as for adolescents and young adults. The rehabilitation clinic is located between Furtwangen and Schönwald in the Black Forest (in the Furtwangen district, but the postal address is Schönwald in the Black Forest ).

history

In 1912 a Berlin doctor built the Black Forest house, which is still standing today, and opened it as a rest home for children suffering from tuberculosis . He couldn't go on with it because of debt. The workers welfare took over the rest home after the First World War . Since then the house has been called Reichskinderheilstätte Schönwald, Ludwig-Frank- Heim. It was the first children's recreation center under medical supervision.

When the Arbeiterwohlfahrt was banned by the National Socialists in 1933, they took over the house, initially for child recovery cures, carried out by the Nazi People's Welfare , but towards the end of the war also as the command center of the SS .

In autumn 1945 the workers' welfare received the rights of use back, and a year later children in need of rest were taken in again. The house was run as a children's home for the workers' welfare in the 1960s. Later it was also used as a holiday home and country school after the children's home was relocated to Lahr / Black Forest "Am Schützenplatz.15".

In 1981 a recreation facility for large and socially disadvantaged families was built on the Katharinenhöhe. The first families moved into the new building a year later.
In 1985, the first inpatient follow-up treatment for children with cancer and their families took place. Two years later, the first teenagers came to take part in such aftercare. In 1988 young adults with cancer were also admitted to the clinic.

In 1990, Katharinenhöhe expanded its concept to include families with children with heart disease. Since 1991, the facility has been running under the name " Katharinenhöhe, rehabilitation clinic for children with families, teenagers and young adults ".

In 1992, the Arbeiterwohlfahrt Baden acquired a former hotel in Schönwald. From now on the adolescents and young adults should be looked after according to their special, age-related needs in a group-oriented concept. On January 6, 1993, the Schönwald house started operations.

In January 2006, the youth arena , which had taken a long time to build, was occupied for the first time. With the construction of this residential and therapy center for young people, the department, which previously worked as Haus Schönwald separately from Katharinenhöhe, was connected directly to the clinic.

Family-oriented rehab concept

A serious illness mainly stresses the patient, mentally as well as physically. However, the other family members are also under great psychological stress when confronted with the disease.

The aim of family-oriented rehabilitation (FOR) is not only to provide medical and psychological care for the patient's child, but also to ensure psychological care for the entire family. However, the treatment of family members should "primarily aim at achieving the rehabilitation goals for the seriously ill child".

The Katharinenhöhe is the first facility to offer this rehabilitation concept for seriously ill children and their families. In addition, there are only 4 other such clinics in Germany to date: The AWO Vita Clinic on Sylt , the Rehabilitation Clinic in Tannheim (Villingen-Schwenningen) ( Black Forest ), the Bad Oechsen Clinic in Bad Oeynhausen ( North Rhine-Westphalia ) and the Brandenburg -Clinic in Bernau ( Brandenburg ).

Famous friends of the Katharinenhöhe

The recreation facility received its first prominent visit in 1925 when Marie Juchacz , the founder of the Workers' Welfare Association , was present at the entry in the land register .

In 1988 the then Federal President Richard von Weizsäcker visited the clinic.
In August 1993 the then deputy federal chairman of the SPD , Herta Däubler-Gmelin, came to visit the Black Forest. She then became a member of the Association for Friends and Patrons of Katharinenhöhe e. V.

In addition, players from SC Freiburg are regular guests for autograph sessions on the Katharinenhöhe. Another celebrity friend of the clinic is pop singer Tony Marshall , who visits the facility regularly.

As part of the MobileKids Tour 2007 , a road safety initiative supported by DaimlerChrysler , presenter Tim Wilhelm visited the clinic and surprised the children with music and traffic games.
