The Cathedral of Our Lady of Fatima Mother of All Nations ( Russian Собор Пресвятой Девы Марии Фатимской ) is a Roman Catholic church building in the Kazakh city ​​of Karagandy . It is the cathedral of the Karaganda diocese . The 42 meter high cathedral was built between 2004 and 2012. The construction of the building was financed by donations.

Building history

Construction of the cathedral began on September 3, 2004. At the beginning of 2006, the shell of the building was completed and the windows for the building were brought to Qaraghandy from Templin in Germany. In July 2007, an Italian company promised a floor made of granite slabs as a gift.

In mid-2009, Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev was presented with a model of the cathedral, which has been on display in the capital Nur-Sultan (until 2019 Astana) since the end of August 2009 . On August 24, 2009, the two tower domes with from were Austria originating, crosses mounted.

Cardinal Dean Angelo Sodano inaugurated the largest Catholic Church in Central Asia on September 9, 2012.

The total length of the structure is around 51 meters, the total width around 31 meters and the height of the nave is 22 meters. The two towers of the cathedral each tower 42 meters high. The 2000 square meter roof was covered with roof panels from the Austrian company PREFA . Underfloor heating was installed in the interior .

The outside facade of the cathedral is clad with white and yellow natural stone from the Caucasus . The interior was also clad with natural stone up to a height of two meters, as was the crypt and the apse .

Furnishing

The neo-Gothic shrine altar (height 13.4 meters) and two neo-Gothic side altars (height 7.0 and 7.2 meters) were handcrafted in Ortisei in Val Gardena , Italy .

The four bronze bells were made in 2009 by the Grassmayr bell foundry in Innsbruck.

The glass paintings in the church windows were designed by the artist Heide Kordes from Hösbach and were mainly carried out by the Rothkegel Würzburg company.

organ

The organ of the cathedral was manufactured between 2005 and 2010 by the organ building company Pflügerin ( Feldkirch , Austria). It is the only concert organ in Kazakhstan. The instrument has 32 stops on two manuals and a pedal . The actions are mechanical.
