The Cathedral of Łowicz , and Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption and St. Nicholas ( Polish Bazylika Katedralna Wniebowzięcia Najświętszej Maryi Panny i św. Mikołaja w Łowiczu ), is a Roman Catholic church in the town of Łowicz ( German  Lowitsch ) in the region of Łódź , Poland . The cathedral of the Diocese of Łowicz dates from the 17th century.

history

An original wooden church was built around 1100 probably under Prince Władysław Herman , later a Gothic brick church followed. This was raised on April 25, 1433 by Archbishop Wojciech I. Jastrzębiec with the establishment of the collegial chapter to the rank of collegiate church . It was at this time that the first Krakow Academy colony was established in the country. In 1525 the church was damaged in a fire. In 1625, Primate Henryk II. Firlej began to rebuild the collegiate church in the baroque style . Pope Urban VIII offered relics of St. Victoria from Rome , Jan Szefler created a golden reliquary for the saint's head . Firlej's work was continued by Primate Maciej Łubieński. The new church was redesigned in 1668 by Primate Mikołaj Prażmowski according to plans by Tomasz and Andrzej Poncino.

The church was badly damaged during the Battle of the Bzura in 1939. It was rebuilt after the war. On March 25, 1992 Pope John Paul II founded the Diocese of Łowicz and elevated the church to a cathedral. During his apostolic journey, the Pope visited Łowicz and on June 14, 1999 also awarded the cathedral the title of minor basilica . On November 13, 2012 the building was added to the list of historical monuments in Poland.

architecture

The easted church is on the old market square. The towers of the double tower facade were built in the late Renaissance style, the facade in between as well as the three naves in the Baroque style on an approximately square floor plan. This is followed by the choir , the side aisles are surrounded by several chapels with richly decorated altars. The ceiling was painted with frescoes. The church is the burial place for twelve Archbishops of Gniezno and Primates of Poland, who had their headquarters here until the First Polish Republic .
