The Cathedral of Colima or the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe ( Spanish Catedral Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe ) is a Roman Catholic church in the center of Colima , capital of the Mexican state of the same name . The cathedral of the Diocese of Colima is dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe the Blessed Mother and has the rank of a minor basilica . The church of the oldest parish in the city was built in the 19th century in a classical style with a neo-baroque interior. It is protected as a historical monument .

history

After the city was founded in 1523, the first clay church was built on the site of today's cathedral in 1525. The Church was the first in Latin America to be dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe . Today's church was completed after construction began in 1820 and after a long construction period in 1894. It was built in the classical style by Lucio Uribe based on plans by Longino Banda. As early as 1881 she had taken over the function of the cathedral of the newly created diocese. In 1998 Pope John Paul II gave the cathedral the rank of minor basilica.

architecture

A portal on two pairs of Ionic columns stands in front of the simple double tower facade . Behind it, the single-nave church opens on a cross-shaped floor plan. The crossing dome rises above a drum with round windows. The ceilings are designed as cross vaults .

The interior is decorated with cedar wood carvings by carpenters Manuel Cedeño and Andrés Gonzaléz. The pulpit was carved by Othón Bustos. The old sculpture by Felipe de Jesús, the patron saint of Colima, is significant.
