history
The Way of St. James crossed the Ebro in Logroño since the 10th century . A settlement was established here, which was declared a town in 1431. In 1435 a monastery was founded which was attached to the nearby monastery of San Martín de Albelda . It was assigned to Santa María de la Redonda , a Romanesque church, at that time a round or polygonal building (hence the name Redonda , "the round"). The oldest surviving mention of this church comes from the 12th century.
A new church in late Gothic style was built between 1516 and 1598 . In the 17th century, the Christ Chapel was added to the east. In the 18th century the choir was lowered to the level of the main nave and in 1742 the two-tower facade was built. The two towers followed from 1747 to 1756.
In 1959 the collegiate church was declared a co-cathedral, which shares the rank with the historic cathedrals of Calahorra (15th century) and Santo Domingo de La Calzada (11th century).
