Morón Cathedral
The Cathedral of Morón or Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception of the Good Voyage ( Spanish Catedral Basílica Inmaculada Concepción del Buen Viaje ) is a Roman Catholic church in Morón in the Argentine province of Buenos Aires . The Cathedral of the Diocese of Morón is under the invocation of the Conception Immaculate of Mary Mother of God ordained and carries the title of a Minor Basilica .
history
An oratorio was created at a fort on the site of today's city of Morón outside Buenos Aires. The Jesuits then placed a carved Virgin Mary figure of the Immaculate Conception of the Way in a chapel that is venerated in the cathedral to this day. In 1776 a parish was established here and a church was built. In 1807, Bishop Benito Lué y Riega fled to the Church of Morón during the English invasions. The city was mentioned in official documents of the state as Morón de la Concepción in 1838.
The second church on this site was built in 1854 by Pastor Francisco Romero. The building permit was granted in 1852 after severe damage was found to the old church. The same priest Romero solemnly laid the foundation stone of the third and present church on July 31, 1868. This church, widened for the growing population, was used from 1871, construction was completed with the construction of its two towers on the portico in 1885. The consecration took place on August 15, 1944. In 1947 the diocesan coronation of the Virgin Mary took place. Pope Pius XII raised the church in 1957 to the cathedral of the newly created diocese of Morón. In 1961 the statue of the Virgin Mary was crowned by Archbishop Antonio Cardinal Caggiano . In August 1963, Pope John XXIII awarded after efforts by Bishop Miguel Raspanti, the cathedral also received the title of a minor basilica. In June 1982 Pope John Paul II visited Morón and prayed before the image of the Immaculate Conception of the Good Journey . In 1995 the cathedral was declared an urban historical monument.
