The Cathedral of Vannes , French Cathédrale Saint-Pierre de Vannes , is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Vannes , the capital of the French department of Morbihan . It also bears the title of a minor basilica .

The cathedral was built in the Gothic style on the site of an older Romanesque cathedral. Construction began in the 15th century and continued into the 19th century. Only the Romanesque bell tower from the 13th century, which was integrated into the new building, is older.

history

The inner

The oldest building dates from around 1020. Constructed of granite in the Romanesque style , it was repeatedly supplemented by extensions, so that this cathedral was a building with many stylistic elements. The new Gothic building in the 15th century (between 1450 and 1520) became necessary because the old building had become too small for the crowds of pilgrims who wanted to visit the tomb of Saint Vincent Ferrer , who died in Vannes in 1419 and was buried in the cathedral choir has been.

The length and transept as well as the portal construction on the north side date from this time. This portal building contains - in accordance with Breton customs - twelve niches to accommodate statues of the twelve apostles. In the 16th century, a round, multi-story Renaissance chapel, the Chapelle du Saint-Sacrement, was added to the north facade of the transept at the height of the fifth bay. The vaults and the choir were built between 1771 and 1774. Finally, the south tower and west facade date from the middle of the 19th century.

Dimensions

The cathedral is 110 meters long, making it one of the longest of the Breton cathedrals.

Outside

The west facade was built in 1857 in neo-Gothic style . Outside on the central pillar of the portal is a statue of the Dominican Vincent Ferrer, who comes from Valencia and whose tomb is in the cathedral. The north facade opens onto the monastery garden (with the ruins of the monastery from the 16th century) and the rue des Chanoines with the late Gothic porch Porche des chanoines and the niches for the statues of the twelve apostles.

Inside

The nave extends over six zygomatic arches, the first of which forms the narthex . There are no side aisles, instead there are two series of five chapels directly adjacent to the nave and the two towers on the first zygomatic arch.

The choir is surrounded by a large ambulatory, which in the Middle Ages served to channel the pilgrims who wanted to see Vincent Ferrer's tomb.

organ

The organ on the west gallery was built in 1894 by the organ builder Debierre. The instrument has 35 registers on three manuals and a pedal. The playing and stop actions are electric.
