history

Predecessor cathedrals

The diocese of Wloclawek, also known under the German name Leslau, was founded in 996. There are only inadequate archaeological finds of the first churches used as cathedrals, such as the castle chapel, the first written information about the cathedral in Wloclawek dates back to 1185. After being damaged by flooding the nearby Vistula and fires, it came under the direction of Bishop Michal Godziemba (1222–1252) for the resolution of a new building. Little is known about this church, which was destroyed by the Teutonic Order in 1329.

The current cathedral

After an agreement between Bishop Maciej von Golancz (1323-1364) and the Grand Master of the Teutonic Order, Werner von Orseln , the foundation stone was laid by Golancz in 1340. During the next 25 years the cathedral walls were built. Golancz 'nephew Zbylut (1365-1383) succeeded the diocese and continued to build the cathedral. The details of the construction process are uncertain. The first stage, including the choir, southern sacristy and treasury, was most likely completed under the direction of Maciej Golanczewski. During the tenure of Zbylut, the roofs and the sacristy were completed and the high altar with the figure of Our Lady was erected. The Gothic stained glass windows from 1360 are the oldest in Poland.

On May 13, 1411, the unfinished building was officially consecrated in the presence of King Władysław II Jagiełło . Construction continued in the second half of the 15th century with work on the chapels around the main body of the church. Next to the southern ship the chapel in 1527 were St. Martin and Chapter House and the Cibavit Chapel built 1,541th At the beginning of the 16th century, these two chapels were rebuilt in the Mannerist style and covered with a dome with a lantern. Over time, the cathedral was in need of renovation. In the second half of the 18th century the roof was renovated, while in the 19th century the cathedral was regotified . Bishop Wincenty Teofil Popiel wanted to make the cathedral more monumental and decided to enlarge the towers. Work began in 1878. The raised towers were completed with pointed helmets .

In 1907 Pope Pius X gave the cathedral the title of minor basilica. Pope John Paul II visited the cathedral during his stay on June 6th and 7th, 1991 in Włocławek.
