Kathua is a city ( Municipal Council ) in the south of the Indian Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir .
It forms the administrative seat of the district of the same name . In the 2011 census, the population was 51,991, including the suburbs 59,866.
The city of Kathua is located in the lowlands 70 km southeast of Jammu on a canal that branches off to the right from the Ravi at the Madhopur dam . The city lies at an altitude of 330 m . The Siwaliks ridge runs 15 km to the north . The National Highway 1A runs through the city and connects the cities of Jammu in the northwest and Pathankot in the southeast. A railway line runs past Kathua - parallel to the trunk road.
