The Katsina Ala is a river in central Africa and a tributary of the Benue .

course

The origin of the Katsina Ala is stated differently. In some sources it arises from the confluence of the Kimbi with the Donga, in others the Kimbi is still referred to as an alternative name to the Katsina Ala. The length specifications are correspondingly different. According to the Nigerian Statistical Office, the length on Nigerian territory is 345.7 km. According to the Encyclopædia Britannica, the total length is only 320 km. At least its upper catchment area covers a large part of the north-east province . It initially flows in a westerly direction across the border into Nigeria. From there it has a north-westerly course, past the city of Katsina Ala , until it flows into the Benue opposite Bajimba , about 40 km above Makurdi .

Nyos lake

Lake Nyos lies in its upper catchment area. It is feared that the lake's natural dam could break. Therefore, in order to protect the deeper settled people in the Katsina Ala catchment area, the Kashimbila Dam was put into operation in 2015.

Use of hydropower

Apart from the Kashimbila dam, which already has a capacity of 40 MW, it was announced in March 2012 that a power plant with a capacity of 450 MW is to be realized on the Cameroonian side for $ 1 billion.

Hydrometry

The flow rate of the river was measured at the Katsina Ala gauge in about three quarters of the catchment area in m³ / s.
