As Kaukonen ( ancient Greek Καύκωνες , Kaukones ) is an often mentioned in ancient sources probably pre-Greek population, on the Peloponnese called.

According to ancient sources, the Kaukonen lived in the Peloponnese. According to Homer, they settled in Triphylia not far from Pylos . Also with Herodotus they belong to the originally pre-Greek population of Tripyhlia and were displaced by the Minyans . Specifically in the vicinity of the Triphylian city of Lepreon, she located in the early 3rd century BC. BC Zenodotus of Ephesus and for others too, Lepreon is a city of the Kaukonen, Pausanias specifically mentions that he did not see the grave of the eponymous hero Kaukon in Lepreon.

But there were also interpretations in antiquity that sought the residence of the Kaukonen in the actual Elis and in western Achaia , that is, the north-western Peloponnese; Apollodor in particular took this view and gathered literary evidence for this view. With reference to Antimachus of Colophon , he believed that the Kaukonen had settled in the area of the city of Dyme (now Kato Achaia) near the Gulf of Patras . With Dyme, Aristotle also brought the Kaukonen in connection, who thought they were divided into two groups, both around Dyme and in Triphylia.

In the Iliad, Homer also names Kaukonen among the Trojan allies in the Trojan War , who are also mentioned elsewhere and were generally settled in northern Asia Minor on the Parthenios River. They are to be distinguished from the chewing cones of the Peloponnese.
