The kaunisvaara mine 's iron ore - mine at Pajala in the Swedish province of County Norrbotten . The iron ore mining began in December 2012 and was discontinued on February 8, 2013 due to the bankruptcy of the operating company. In October 2014, operations were finally closed for a second time, or “preserved”.
geography
The iron ore deposits are located about a hundred kilometers north of the Arctic Circle , near the Swedish-Finnish border.
Project
The kaunisvaara mine is of Northland Resources , one in the north of Sweden and Finland's active exploration operated and development company. The investment is $ 900 million.
There are currently around two hundred employees in Pajala. The first ship with 55,000 tons of iron ore from Kaunisvaara was destined for Tata Steel IJmuiden and arrived there on March 2, 2013.
The iron ore concentrate production started in December 2012, by the end of January 18,500 tons had been produced and some of them had already been transported to Narvik.
The company's Swedish subsidiary filed for bankruptcy on February 8, 2013, but it is currently unclear whether the project will continue.
Deposits
For kaunisvaara mine include the deposits Tapuli , Palotieva and Sahavaara . The largest deposit is the centrally located Tapuli deposit, to the north of which is the small Palotieva deposit . Four kilometers south of Tapuli , near the village of Kaunisvaara, is the deposit Sahavaara . The iron ore consists of 43 percent magnetite .
Extraction and processing
The raw ore extracted in the Tapuli and Sahavaara opencast mines is crushed at the edge of the pits and conveyed on conveyor belts to the processing plant in Kaunisvaara. Around 4 million tons of concentrate should be produced from the raw ore annually.
transport
The pellets were transported by truck from Kaunisvaara to Svappavaara and from there to Narvik by the Swedish ore railway . A new ore port was to be built in Grundstadsvik near Narvik.
