Kaushik Basu
Kaushik Basu (born January 9, 1952 in Calcutta , West Bengal ) is an Indian economist who was chief economist at the World Bank from 2012 to 2016 . He is Professor of International Studies and Professor of Economics at Cornell University and began a three-year term as President of the International Economic Association in June 2017 . From 2009 to 2012 he was the chief economic advisor to the Indian government.
Life
Kaushik Basu was born in Calcutta, India and was educated at St. Xavier's Collegiate School in Calcutta, a Catholic private school. He was initially interested in physics , but decided to become an economist. In 1969 he moved to Delhi to study economics (Honors) at St. Stephen's College . After completing his master's degree, he did his doctorate from 1974 to 1976 at the London School of Economics . At university he was heavily influenced by Amartya Sen's economic theories .
After receiving his PhD, Basu briefly lectured at the University of Reading and returned to India in 1977, where he worked as an economist and later as Professor of Economics at the Delhi School of Economics . Over the years, Basu been visiting professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology , the Harvard University , the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton ( New Jersey ), at the Catholic University in Leuven (Louvain-la-Neuve) in Belgium and at the London School of Economics, at which he was an excellent guest in 1993. He was also a visiting scholar at the Indian Statistical Institute , a public university in Calcutta. In 1992 he founded the Center for Development Economics at the Delhi School of Economics and was the first executive director until 1996. From 2006 to 2009 he was director of the Center for Analytic Economics and chair of the Cornell University School of Economics.
From 2009 he was an advisor to the Indian government during the tenure of Manmohan Singh . On September 5, 2012, he was appointed Chief Economist of the World Bank. During his tenure at the World Bank taught Basu at the George Washington University in Washington, DC on game theory . He has been President of the International Economic Association since 2017 .
Basu is the author of several books on economics. He currently writes monthly columns for Project Syndicate .
Personal
Kaushik Basu believes that good moral qualities are essential for growth and development in business. Honesty, trustworthiness and integrity are important qualities that must be included for the personal development of the individual and for society . Basu also sees the need to promote quality thinking in government work and public debate.
Kaushik Basu is married to Alaka Malwade Basu, a professor at Cornell University. He has two children. Basu has been the holder of the Padma Bhushan , the third highest civil order in India , since 2008 .
