Kees de Kort (born December 2, 1934 in Nijkerk , Netherlands ) is a Dutch painter , designer and illustrator . He became famous for his pictures of biblical stories for children.

Life

Kees de Kort studied from 1956 to 1962 at the Amersfoort Art Academy , the Utrecht Art School and the Reich Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam .

He first created Bible illustrations for school radio . In 1965 the Dutch Bible Society commissioned him to create a series of biblical stories for people with intellectual disabilities . From 1967 onwards, the series What the Bible tells us was created - small picture books, each with a story. The text is written in simple language , it is limited to individual short sentences. For his illustrations, De Kort developed an unmistakable style with lively figures and bold colors that appeals to children and adults directly without ever becoming kitschy .

These books quickly made him known to a large audience, they appeared in 65 countries and were soon translated into German. De Kort has now illustrated all of the most famous stories in the Bible; they have been combined into a large children's Bible.

De Kort is currently working on Bible illustrations for adults ( Amos , Song of Songs , Job ). He has also created stained glass windows and triptychs with religious themes.

De Kort lives in Bergen (North Holland) , is married and has two sons who are also artistically active.
