Life

Keiko Doi received piano lessons for the first time after her fifth birthday. She deepened her piano training throughout her school time. Although her junior high school education focused on European classical music , she developed an interest in jazz and began writing her own music. Stevie Wonder , Sergei Rachmaninoff , Maurice Jarre and Chick Corea were among her role models during this time. Matsui studied children's culture at Joshi Daigaku ( 日本 女子 大学 , Women's University of Japan), but then began studying music at the Yamaha Music Foundation . She also played with the Japanese jazz fusion group Cosmos .

At the age of 19 she was sent by Yamaha to the USA to record an album there. There she met Kazu Matsui (born June 5, 1954), who worked as a producer for this project. They both got married and Keiko moved to the United States. In 1987 she made her solo debut Drop of Water ; the singer Carl Anderson took part in the title song of the same name . In 1999 and 2000, Matsui received the Oasis Prize for best female smooth jazz artist. With the income from her music she supports various cancer organizations.

Keiko and Kazu Matsui have two daughters. The family lives in Los Angeles .
