history

The name of the district is said to come from a cattle ranch or a stream in Scotland . During the Victorian Gold Rush, soldiers of fortune set up camp in what is now Keilor on their way to the gold fields in Castlemaine and Ballarat . In 1868 the wooden bridge over the Maribyrnong River was replaced by an iron bridge. Until the end of World War II , the area was dominated by agriculture. After that, the population rose sharply due to the settlement of industrial companies in the surrounding districts.

Two kilometers north of Keilor, at the confluence of the Maribyrnong River and Dry Creek, the 8,000-year-old Keilor skull named after the place where it was found was discovered in 1940 .

Mark Viduka , Australian national soccer player, grew up in Keilor.
