Calder Freeway with Mount Macedon in the background |
The Calder Freeway is a highway in the south of the Australian state of Victoria . It connects the Tullamarine Freeway in Niddrie ( Melbourne ) with the Calder Highway in Ravenswood South . It replaces parts of the Calder Highway. Initially, the Calder Freeway was just a short continuation of the Tullamarine Freeway, which already merged into the Calder Highway in Keilor , a northwest suburb of Melbourne. However, it was gradually extended and has now reached Ravenwood South. The Calder Highway leads to Bendigo . The last stretch of the highway that does not belong to the freeway was also expanded to four lanes and opened to traffic on April 20, 2009.
history
The Calder Highway was named after road engineer William Calder , who chaired the Country Roads Board (predecessor of VicRoads ) from 1913 to 1928.
The highway was originally named National Road 79 (N79). With the conversion of street numbering in Victoria to the alphanumeric system at the end of the 1990s, the numbering was changed to A79 for most of the route. Only the already existing short stretch of motorway within Melbourne was numbered M79.
The two-lane Calder Highway originally began at the end of Keilor Road in Niddrie . In the late 1960s and early 1970s, this road was upgraded to freeway standard along with the Tullamarine Freeway, ended in Keilor East and continued from there as the Calder Highway. In the early 1980s, the freeway was extended to Keilor. But it was not until the 1990s that the further expansion of the Calder Highway towards Bendigo to four lanes began.
The Calder Highway between Melton Highway and Western Ring Road is listed in the 1969 Melbourne Transportation Plan as Freeway Corridor F4, which runs over the Tullamarine Freeway to Bell Street in Templestowe .
course
In Ravenswood South, the Calder Highway (A79) becomes the Calder Freeway with four lanes to the edge of Greater Melbourne and then six lanes. It bypasses most of the towns the old Calder Highway passed through. Replaced by the freeway, but still existing sections of the Calder Highway were numbered C791 to C794, or within Melbourne (strangely enough) still N79.
At its northwestern end, the freeway runs parallel to the A300 to the south of Harcourt , from where the Midland Highway continues as the A300 to the southwest towards Ballarat and Geelong .
Cities that are bypassed but still accessible from the freeway:
- Harcourt
- Elphinstone
- Taradale
- Malmsbury
- Kyneton
- Woodend
- Macedon
- Gisborne
- Diggers rest
From the junction with Green Gully Road in Keilor , the freeway continues east to the Tullamarine Freeway (S40) and to downtown Melbourne and, in addition to the old numbering N79 as state road 40, also bears the numbering S40.
The freeway ends at the newly developed intersection with the Tullamarine Freeway, which connects Melbourne Airport with downtown Melbourne and continues to CityLink (M1).
expansion
Between Kyneton and Ravenswood
The expansion of the Calder Highway is jointly financed by the Australian federal government and the government of Victoria. The cost is estimated at AU $ 404 million. The four-lane expansion between Melbourne and Bendigo has already taken place - to Ravenswood South on the freeway standard - and was opened to traffic on April 20, 2009.
The expansion of the Calder Highway between Kyneton and Ravenswood was divided into two sections: Kyneton to Faraday and Faraday to Ravenswood. The latter section is still under construction, but is also open to traffic.
Junction of Calder Highway or Calder Alternative Route
The expansion of the intersection of the Calder Freeway and the old Calder Highway in Ravenswood is proposed and is to be financed with Auslink 2 (2009-2014).
Between Western Ring Road and Melton Highway
VicRoads has completed widening the Calder Freeway from the Western Ring Road to the Melton Highway . The Autobahn was widened from four to four lanes. The maximum permissible speed has been reduced from 100 km / h to 80 km / h. Confusingly, the speed limit is north from Keilor Park Drive to the service center in Calder Park , while south is from the service center to the bridge over Green Gully Road . In October 2010 it was announced that the speed limit would be increased back to 100 km / h as a result of years of process outside of peak hours (8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.). However, 30 variable speed restriction zones are to be installed along the freeway.
Proposed improvements in security and capacity are to be funded through Auslink 2 (2009-2014).
Junction with Kings Road
VicRoads will extend Kings Road to the Calder Freeway in Taylors Lakes as part of an AU $ 62 million project to reduce the level intersections between Sunshine Avenue and Calder Park Drive . This includes a bridge over Kings Road, a shamrock connection to the freeway and the closure of the intersection with Robertson Road .
