No Time for Dreams is a German-Austrian feature film from 2014 on the subject of attention deficit syndrome in children.
action
The Falk family has two children, the eleven year old Merle and the pubescent fifteen year old Lea. As Merle's performance in school continues to decline, her class teacher advises that the child be removed from school. After the pediatrician sent her to see a child psychologist, she was diagnosed with ADD, attention deficit disorder. After the parents Roman and Kathrin initially refused medical treatment, they tried to reduce the school deficits of their youngest daughter through therapies and home learning programs. The older daughter soon feels neglected and tries to flee to her birth father in Berlin. At the same time, Kathrin collapses due to the enormous strain at home. Kathrin's decision to try medication leads to a dispute between the couple. The film ends with the family visiting a child psychologist asking about medication.
Others
Most of the outdoor shots were shot in Halle (Saale) , especially at Uniplatz and Händelkarree.
reception
The Tagesspiegel criticizes that the focus is less on the illness itself than on the family situation:
“It is thanks to the everyday and conservatively staged (director: Christine Hartmann) story to focus on ADS and to provide information in an entertaining way. Also about the fact that drugs for children cannot always be condemned across the board when faced with such mental illness, as the father does in the film. "
The dpa reviewer Ulrike Cordes also criticizes the lack of background, but also emphasizes the openness to various forms of therapy:
“The fictional film provides realistic educational work without ingratulating public opinion. ... It is the merit of the feature film to focus on ADD and to provide information - also about the fact that drugs cannot be condemned across the board for children with such a mental illness ... The screenplay clearly demonstrates the different perspectives of doctors and parents , grandmother, teacher, girlfriend and children. Just like the professional and private consequences of their insistence on self-therapy with Kathrin and Roman. "
