Keith Brown (athlete)

Keith Brown (born June 15, 1913 - July 15, 1991 in Delmar , California ) was an American athlete who was successful as a pole vaulter in the early 1930s .

He jumped two world records:

  • Junior WR with 4.21 m on June 18, 1932 in Cambridge
  • WR with 4.39 m on June 1, 1935 in Boston . Brown improved the three-year-old record of his compatriot William Graber by 2 cm. In the following year 1936 he lost the world record to George Varoff , who jumped 4.43 m.

He won several championship titles, which he always had to share with at least one other athlete. Only in 1935, when he jumped the world record with 4.39 m, he became sole champion.

  • Hall: 1933 4.11 m

At the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin Keith Brown did not participate. With a height of 1.88 m, his competition weight was 73 kg.

Brown graduated from Yale University . He then worked for the Procter & Gamble Company in Chicago before setting up his own cattle ranch near Phoenix . He died of emphysema at the age of 78 .

He was married to Mary Lou. The marriage resulted in two daughters (Julia and Katherine) and two sons (Keith and Steve).
