The nature reserve Kelzer- and Saarscher Bachtal is located in the municipality of Simmerath , west of Lammersdorf and touches the Kalltalsperre in the north.

description

Near-natural deciduous forest remnants can be found in the floodplains of the Kelzer and Saarsch Bach brooks. The three western source streams are deepened and straightened. They are lined with alders and shrub willows. From the sewage treatment plant , the stream flows through a notch valley wooded with pigs . The valley floor is about ten meters wide at its widest point. The creek bed , two to three meters wide, is lined with steep rock walls up to four meters high, with many small cascades , gravel banks and ponds . The valley floor is overgrown in parts with old alders , English oaks and sycamore maples. In the northern forest clearings, a pipe grass heather with scattered bell heather , peat moss areas and a drained high moor area with typical plants such as bog lily has been preserved. The many interspersed natural and artificial rock biotopes also enrich the area structurally. With regard to the nationwide biotope network of near-natural rivers, the area is an important building block; The protection goal is the preservation of the river dynamics by preserving the water regime, as well as the careful deconstruction of the spruce forests into near-natural deciduous forest stands.

Protection purpose

The following types of biotope to be protected can be found in this area: springs, natural rock formations, near-natural and undeveloped stream sections, alluvial forests , swamp forests , wet and wet grassland, wet heather and moor relics.
