Kemenate Reinstädt

The Kemenate Reinstädt is a massive residential tower from the time of the early Renaissance in the center of Reinstädt , a village in a side valley of the Saale about 20 kilometers southwest of Jena .

location

Reinstädt is located at the western end of a narrow side valley which is drained by the Reinstädter Bach, which flows into the Saale at Kahla . The fortification thus served primarily to protect the aristocratic court and the places Reinstädt and Geunitz. At the same time, access to the Saale valley was monitored from here.

The bower is now free-standing in the courtyard of a rectangular property and is located immediately north of the village church, which is also fortified. Some former farm buildings still belong to the property.

history

Since 1083 there was a noble residence in the locality. According to official records, today's construction began in 1408 and has five floors. The building is one of the few old residential towers in Thuringia and is structurally related to the neighboring fortified church in Reinstädt .

Structural matters

The tower-like stone fortification is called Kemenate . The name refers to the fact that one could also show heated living rooms inside. Remains of ramparts and fortification ditches and a connection with the Reinstädter Bach are no longer recognizable. The Kemenate Ziegenrück and the Kemenate Orlamünde are similar preserved buildings, also located above the Saale.
