The bower above the Saale in Ziegenrück

The Kemenate Ziegenrück is located in Ziegenrück in the Saale-Orla district . Ziegenrück belongs to the special form of the bower , which is located in the area of the upper Saale-Elster line.

location

The former settlement of Ziegenrück Castle and the later town lies in the deeply cut valley of the meandering Saale between the Bleilochtalsperre upstream and the Hohenwarte reservoir downstream. At that time the Saale meandered almost untouched between Burgk to the settlement of Ziegenrück and further between wooded mountains, meadows and fields. The former moated castle Sornitz of the desert Sornitz (Moxa) , located further north, was probably an outer castle of Ziegenrück Castle.

The Kemenate Ziegenrück is located above north of the Ziegenrück settlement. It was the bower of the former Ziegenrück Castle. The castle was strategically located on a rock spur high above the town and the Saale between Dreba and Sormitztal with extremely steep slopes on three sides. Trenches divided the facility into three sections and secured the access route to the castle. The first two trenches are still there.

Buildings

Castle complex

The house, the Kemenate, is from the 15th century and has a floor area of 17 m × 13 m and a height of 20 meters. The wall thickness is 1.6 to 1.8 meters. A basement and four floors are built into the building. The windows are unevenly distributed and there are even loopholes under the roof . The Ziegenrück residential tower still has siblings in the Reinstädt and Orlamünde rooms in the Saale Valley . They are rare and well-preserved examples of Thuringian wide residential towers. The keep had a diameter of 10 meters and was demolished in 1775. The outlines of the foundation walls can still be seen.

history

The castle belonged to the Saalfeld estate complex and was named in 1222. It was strategically located on a rock spur high above the Saale between the Dreba and Sormiz valleys and was used to monitor and secure the crossing of the Saale for the road from north to south. The rock spur has steep slopes on three sides and had ditches that divided the system into sections.

The owners were the Counts of Orlamünde . At the beginning of the 14th century it went to the Landgrave of Thuringia . The Vogt Heinrich II. Reuss von Plauen was also temporarily the owner. Since the end of the 13th century, the lords of Obernitz had been ministerials at the castle . In 1448, Duke Wilhelm of Saxony resold the town and castle of Ziegenrück for 2,000 guilders to Veit von Obernitz. In 1455 Hans von Obernitz bought Castle Voigtsberg, including the Vogtsberg office and Vogtsberg with the towns of Oelsnitz , Adorf and Neukirchen, from Heinrich the Younger von Reuss zu Plauen .

In 1485 the castle came to the Ernestine line of the Wettins and was the official seat. After several fires, the castle was partially demolished and rebuilt in the 18th and 19th centuries. For a long time it served as a youth hostel . Now a hotel is under discussion.
