Saalfeld Castle
Saalfeld Castle is a baroque castle on the site of a former Benedictine monastery in Saalfeld in the Saale valley . It was built from 1677 to 1726 and under several site managers. The building served as the residence of Duke Johann Ernst von Sachsen-Saalfeld until 1735 .
Construction and history
On March 26, 1677, the construction of the castle by the dukes Albrecht and Bernhard von Sachsen-Gotha began . 13 years later, the palace construction was continued under Duke Johann Ernst von Sachsen-Saalfeld. The north wing was completed in 1704. At the same time, work on the palace garden with orangery, stables and music pavilion was carried out, and the palace chapel was also built at this time. In 1720 the low south wing (no longer available today) and thus the entire building was completed. It took until 1726 before the interior was completed. The stairwell and palace chapel still bear witness to the high level of artistic creativity of local and Italian artists.
From 1735 the castle was converted into the administrative seat of the city. Between 1919 and 1922 it became a government office. After a fire in 1953, part of the chapel roof structure was destroyed, which was restored in 1966 .
Todays use
