Kanatschan Alibekow ( Russian Канатжан Алибеков , Kazakh Қанатжан Әлібеков ) (* 1950 ) - also known as Ken Alibek since 1992 - is an American doctor , microbiologist , colonel and bio-weapons expert who fled the Soviet Union .

Life

Ken Alibek was born as Kanatschan Alibekow in the Kazakh village of Kautschuk and grew up in Alma-Ata . He studied military medicine in Tomsk and then worked for Biopreparat Moscow on a bioweapons program.

His first job (1975) was the Institute for Applied Biochemistry (IAB) near Omutninsk , a combined pesticide production plant and reserve bioweapons factory in preparation for a bioweapons war. In Omutninsk, Alibek developed culture media for the cultivation and mass production of bacteria suitable as biological weapons. He optimized the development and large-scale production of microorganisms and their toxins. After less than a year in Omutninsk, Alibek was transferred to Berdsk in Siberia . With the support of a colleague, he set up a microbiological laboratory that optimized biological techniques for the rapid multiplication of microorganisms that were suitable for the production of biological weapons.

Soon, Alibekov was transferred back, where he rose to the position of deputy director. He quickly rose up the hierarchy of the Soviet Army and became the first director of Biopreparat , where he led a bioweapons research program.

In 1992 he fled to the USA, became an American citizen and anti-bioweapons. He has actively campaigned for biological disarmament and a bio-weapons-free military strategy for the US government. He is CEO of AFG Biosolutions Inc. (USA) and President and CEO of MaxWell Biocorporation, LLC (Ukraine).

After large quantities of the antidote ciprofloxacin were issued in 2001 for fear of further anthrax attacks , Alibek warned that the widespread use of antibiotics would result in numerous new, resistant bacteria.
