Ken Jacobs

Ken Jacobs (born May 25, 1933 in Williamsburg , Brooklyn , New York City , USA ) is an American avant-garde film director , experimental filmmaker and university professor who lives in New York City.

life and work

Ken Jacobs studied painting with Hans Hofmann . Together with Larry Gottheim, he founded the Department of Cinema at Binghamton University in New York (then: Harpur College ) in 1969 , where he taught, among other things, Art Spiegelman , the author of the comic book Mouse - The Story of a Survivor . Jacobs was Distinguished Professor of Cinema there until his retirement in 2003 .

In the early 1970s he coined the term paracinema for film experiences that were outside of standard cinema technology. Ken Jacobs took part in Documenta 5 in Kassel in 1972, where his films were shown in the Film Show : New American Cinema department and he was also represented at Documenta 6 (1977).

Jacobs Film Tom, Tom, the Piper's Son (1969) was inducted into the US National Film Registry in 2007. Another notable work is Star Spangled to Death (2004), a nearly seven-hour film that consists essentially of found footage , largely uncut footage.
