Ken Stanley

Ken Stanley (born February 19, 1922 in Hulme (Manchester) ; † March 1, 2013 in Mirfield ) was an English table tennis player and coach who took part in three world championships in the 1930s and 1940s and won bronze in the team competition in 1939.

Career

Ken Stanley started playing table tennis when he was 11 years old. He was English junior champion three times in a row.

He first played for England at the 1938 World Cup . The next World Cup, in 1939 , was his most successful. In the team competition he took bronze, in doubles with Ernest Bubley he made it to the quarterfinals.

At the beginning of the Second World War he volunteered for the Royal Air Force , where he was deployed in India. Here he still had enough time for table tennis activities. Here he caused a stir internationally when he won the All India Cup in singles, doubles and mixed. In 1948 he was nominated again for the world championship.

In the late 1940s he began a career as a coach. In 1947 he worked in Scotland for two years, from 1951 he worked for six months in New Zealand, where he also won the New Zealand Open in 1952.

In 1959, Ken Stanley published Table Tennis - A New Approach (112 pages).

Private

Ken Stanley married Marion Brook in 1942. He had four children with her. His son David and daughter Janet also played table tennis and won several national youth titles.
