The Kenepuru Sound is an estuary in the north of the South Island of New Zealand with access to the Pelorus Sound .

Origin of name

Kenepuru means something like mud or mud in the Māori language . The bay at the end of the Sound at Kenepuru Head is very shallow and silted up. Māori may therefore have called the sound that.

geography

The Kenepuru Sound is located just north of the Queen Charlotte Sound , the Mahau Sound and 10 km north of the ferry port of Picton . The sound is around 23 km long and has a maximum width of around 4.6 km. Access to Kenepuru Sound is only possible via Pelorus Sound , which connects to the west of the approximately 1318 m wide opening. The entire coastline of the Sound stretches for around 90 km.

geology

Like all sounds , channels and inlets of the Marlborough Sounds , the waters consist of former river valleys flooded by the sea. While the South Island was sinking, the sea level has been rising since the last glacial period , which led to the flooding of coastal areas and coastal valleys.

use

Parts of the sound are used for oyster farming.
